A United States Postal Service (USPS) mail delivery truck is seen in Queens, New York City, U.S., May 9, 2022. Postal Service on Tuesday reported a $6.5 billion net loss for the 12 months ending Sept. 30 with revenue down 0.4% to $78.2 billion as first-class mail fell to the lowest volume since 1968. The Postal Service said results were significantly affected by the impact of inflation on operating expenses. The net loss was also impacted by accounting for its underfunded retirements caused by actuarial revaluation and discount rate changes. First-class mail, used by most people to send letters and pay bills, is the highest revenue-generating mail class, accounting for $24.5 billion, or 31% of USPS 2023 revenue.

But the major railroads hauled slightly fewer containers than a year ago and 11% fewer containers than four years earlier. The strong growth in manufacturing activity between the middle of 2020 and middle of 2022 was a rebound following the disruption caused by the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic and associated lockdowns. Since then spending has rotated back towards services and there has been little if any expansion in the manufacturing sector. Signage for the Nintendo Switch is seen at a GameStop in Manhattan, New York, U.S., December 7, 2021. The Japanese firm said it sold 4.3 million copies of "Super Mario Bros. Wonder" - the first entirely new instalment in the almost 40-year-old side-scrolling series in a decade - within two weeks of its Oct. 20 launch. That is the best performance of any "Super Mario" title, Nintendo said, as it takes advantage of the Switch install base of more than 130 million units and interest generated by a barnstorming animated movie featuring the moustachioed plumber. The comments come a day after Nintendo reported it sold 6.84 million Switch units in the first six months of the financial year that started in April, a slight increase on the same period a year earlier. Nintendo also announced on Wednesday "Super Mario" creator Shigeru Miyamoto is developing a live action adaptation of the "Zelda" franchise.

REUTERS/Andrew Kelly/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Nov 7 (Reuters) - Europe has nowhere to hide from U.S. plans to mandate clearing of U.S. Treasuries transactions that will need to be carefully introduced over time, a global derivatives industry body said on Tuesday. A clearing house is backed by a default fund, ensuring that a transaction is completed even if one side of a transaction goes bust. Regulators began mandating the use of clearing more widely in derivatives markets after the global financial crisis in 2008 to improve stability and transparency. "It's something that you need to look at carefully and at this stage I think we still have more questions than answers as to how the actual process of clearing Treasury cash and Treasury repo will play out," Litvack said. Many of the patents at issue in the Food and Drug Administration's Orange Book listing of approved products were for devices such as asthma inhalers and epinephrine autoinjectors, the FTC said. "Wrongfully listed Orange Book patents by pharma companies can raise drug prices for Americans, harm fair competition, and delay better drugs," FTC Chair Lina Khan said on X, formerly known as Twitter. The Orange Book identifies drugs and products that the FDA has deemed safe and effective. The FTC says companies sometimes improperly list patents in the Orange Book that can delay market entry of lower priced generics. Cigna is working with an investment bank to evaluate options for its Medicare Advantage business, which could fetch several billions of dollars in a potential divestment, the sources said. Cigna's Medicare Advantage business generated 4.4% of the company's $179.4 billion in revenue from external customers in 2022. Cigna also said profit margins in Medicare Advantage in 2023 continue to be below its long-term target of 4% to 5%, which it expected to remain the case in 2024. Cigna has said it expects changes to the government's star rating system, which informs some of the reimbursement decisions, will lead to a decrease in the rating of its Medicare Advantage business in payment-year 2024. Strikes at car and truck plants are likely to have a widespread impact on manufacturing activity given their large supply chains. Energy consumption by industrial users steadied over the third quarter, which was consistent with the worst of the manufacturing downturn being over. The stabilisation of both diesel and industrial electricity sales in the summer was consistent with manufacturing activity steadying ahead of a renewed expansion. Because the industrial downturn has been long but shallow, distillate inventories remain well below the long-term seasonal average. Return to expansion would likely cause diesel stocks to deplete rapidly and put upward pressure on industrial prices quickly.
